Atisha was a great Bengal scholar who went to Sumatra to a thriving Buddhist community there and met his root guru and studied the Mahayana for 12 years. When he returned to India, he was invited to go to Tibet which was undergoing many Dharma difficulties after the Tibetan King Langdarma had tried to eliminate Buddhism from Tibet.

In Tibet Atisha helped introduce Mahayana and taught a great deal on the bodhisattva path. His pupil actually founded the Kadampa school of Tibetan Buddhism which is where Gampopa learned the sutra approach to Buddhism and combined it with the tantric Buddhism of Milarepa.

Atisha summarized his approach in 67 verses which was called the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment. This book of 67 pages is a summary of Atisha's teachings. It includes the root verses of Atisha and Thrangu Rinpoche's teaching on developing love and compassion, cultivating bodhichitta which is the ultimate compassion of wanting to help all sentient beings achieve true and lasting happiness, the training in bodhichitta and finally discussing the bodhisattva vow.
