Eliminating the Darkness of Ignorance
Wangchuk Dorje, the Ninth Karmapa, wrote three definitive teachings on Mahamudra meditation. Thrangu Rinpoche has taught on all three of these texts—Eliminating the Darkness of Ignorance, Pointing out the Dharmakaya, and Ocean of Definitive meaning.
Mahamudra is the principle meditation of the Kagyu Lineage and involves looking directly at mind to see the true nature of phenomena and also seeing how we cloud our perception of the world in our normal daily life. In this teaching of 14 talks each of which is about 90 minutes long and was translated by David Karma Choephel, Thrangu Rinpoche provides profound and accessible teachings on Mahamudra practice beginning with the uncommon and common preliminaries as well as the four extraordinary preliminaries specific to Mahamudra practice (causal condition, dominant condition, focal condition, and immediate condition).
Rinpoche then teaches Mahamudra which begins with the practice of Tranquility (Shamatha) including proper posture of body and disposition of the mind. It is Shamatha meditation resting on each of the five sense objects, eliminating dullness and agitation, and meditation without any visual or auditory supports. Rinpoche then continues by teaching the subtle Mahamudra practice of Insight (Vipashyana) which includes looking at and recognizing the mind at rest, and mind in motion, how appearances come to mind, and the differences and similarities between moving and resting mind.
