Mahamudra is a meditation practice which was recommended by the Sixteen Karmapa as being the most appropriate meditation for Western students. It is a very practical meditation since it does not involve any special retreat or implements because it is the direct examining of the mind--either on the cushion or off the cushion. Since then Thrangu Rinpoche has published eight books on Mahamudra, he was asked to give a brief, understandable explanation of Mahamudra for those who wanted to understand this meditation.
This booklet of 54 pages is a summary of Mahamudra that Thrangu Rinpoche gave translated by Yeshe Gyamtso. It covers a brief history of Mayamudra and its importance, Mahamudra Shamatha, Mahamudra Vipashayana, the preliminaries, the stages of meditation, the obstacles to this meditation and how to bring these onto the path.
