Gampopa was one of the most important Kagyu lineage holders. He was a student of Milarepa and set up the first Kagyu monastery in Tibet. Gampopa is known for combining the Kadampa tradition of Atisha with the Mahamudra teachings of Milarepa, and thus establishing the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism.
